ORPG ~ High off of love, drunk from her hate*

High off of love,
drunk from her hate.
It’s like she’s huffing paint,
and she loves it the more she suffers.
She suffocates.

You can’t just sit there
and put everyon’s lives ahead
of yours
and think it counts
as love.

It’s been two weeks since I first saw this ship passing, two weeks since I tried to lure in another ship. Never in my entire life had I failed to lure in a ship, to lure in some new men. But this time was different. No matter how hard I sang, no matter how hard I tried my best to get ahold of the captain and his crew, the ship sailed past me and left without even noticing me. Never had I been more offended.
It’s been two weeks since that day, two weeks that i now have been tailing this ship. Trying to lure every last one of the men on it, and failing everytime. I had always thought that no one woukd be able to resist me. My voice. It was a sirene thing, no man could resist us. No one. Which was the reason for me to follow this ship. I had never been more curious than I was when I found out that everyone on this ship seemed to be able to resist my singing.
It wasn’t hard for me to tail the ship, I was fast and careful. Not once had I been attacked by sailors or other fish. Until this day. The day started like any other. The sun came up and the people on the ship woke up and started to live their lives on sea. It was always fun to look at. But that was when all of a sudden I felt this stinging pain in my tail. A loud scream escaped my lips and when I looked down I saw a shark. My immediate reaction was to hit him on his nose and to break his neck. Of course this immediately killed him but that didn’t change the fact that I was now hurt and most likely going to die.

Two weeks on sea and I've been enjoying every single second of it. My father gave me this beautiful ship for my birthday this year. He is the captain of his own ship which I've lived on for most of my years. He and my mother met in a pub in Ireland near the coast. It was a one night stand, so I wasn't really planned. After the one night stand, my father left with his crew to sail the seas. My mother wanted to keep me, so he gave her some money so she could take care of me. He didn't love her, but he did feel the need to somehow help her to raise me. My mother and I lived together in a small house near the pub they met. She died when I had just turned six. I tried to contact my father, so I wouldn't have to live alone. How could a six year old child take care of herself? After a month, and many messaged bottles thrown into the sea, he came back. I was the youngest girl he'd ever had on his ship. I was so intrigued with all the stuff he was doing, that my biggest dream was to become just like him. And my dream came true. He gave me a ship, which I called Miramar. It's not common for a woman to become the captain and it's definitely not common that the crew is all female as well.
I watched the sun rise. One of my favourite things to see at sea. "Captain, captain!" one of the crewmembers ran up to me in a hurry. I turned to her and asked her what's wrong. She pointed at a specific place in the sea, where I could see a body, a lifeless body it seemed. "Get the other girls! We're saving whoever that is, maybe he or she has some gold on them!" I ordered. I love gold and treasures, like all the pirates out there.

Panic was the main emotion that i felt in that moment. Never had I felt so much pain or panic at once. As I looked down at my tail I could see the blood streaming out of it like water streaming down a waterfall. Tears were coming up in my eyes and panic took over. It was like I had a blackout. I didn’t know what was happening anymore. I could see, hear and smell nothing at all and yet so much at the same time. I didn’t feel safe, I didn’t feel alive for a split second. That was until I felt arms around me, pulling me up and out of the water. I suffocated. It was like I couldn’t breathe anymore. It felt like drowning only the other way around. I was being pulled up and suddenly I was placed on this hard surface. Like I was placed on a rock, only the texture was different. I couldn’t place it any other way than wood from an old ship, only it didn’t feel as moist as usual. I’d even say that it felt dry. Not that I had ever felt anything dry. Everything felt wet where I came from.
This was when I opened my eyes. The bright sun was shining right into my eyes and blinded me for a split second. But it didn’t take long before I could see everything clear again. I was surrounded by people, not my kind, they had legs. But they were not like the men I had ever seen. Most of them had long hair like many of my sisters. There were no beards and their jaws seemed less defined like those from the men that I always saw. It was like this was an entirely new species. A mix of sirenes and the humans that we saw at sea. Saying that I was scared was an understatement. I was terrified. I couldn’t breathe, knowing the air would burn in my lungs and change my beloved tail i to a pair of human legs. I didn’t want that. Changing was no option for me, the pain that that would bring was worse than the pain I felt in my tail right now, I would rather die than change into this human form.

We ran up and down the ship to see how we could get to her in the fastest way possible. "I need that thing in the water alive and well! Hurry up, ya quims!" Two of my best men, or well, women, got into one of the little boats which we needed to get on land. Once the living creature was out of the water and into the little boat, we could see it was a mermaid. Probably a... What did my father call it again? Yes, a sirene. He warned me for those bastards. Their voice is beautiful and irresistible to humans. Legends says that only men are affected by their voice, but women tend to keep their distance too. Once the two women return on the ship together with the sirene, she's thrown on the ground with no water near her. "Ye don't look like yer such a threat, lassie." I looked at her from head to tail. She was badly injured. "Can't the wench heal herself?" Ruby said. She was one of the best pirates I had ever seen, but she never had the interest to become a captain herself. She is older than me, so knew all about the legends and stories a pirate is supposed to know. "Aye." I answered and kneeled down next to the sirene. "Can ye talk?" I asked and looked at the wound on her tail. How is she still conscious? She must have lost a lot of blood. I had never seen a sirene before in my life and I wish I wouldn't have to. Their voice won't hurt us, but we have no idea how strong they are and if they could hurt us in another way. "Tie her up, she might be dangerous."

The voices that left the people their mouths were different than those from the men I was used to hearing. They didn’t look like the voices of me and my sisters either which confused me. They were like a mix between the low voices of the men and the high pitched voices of me and my sisters. While the voices were still quite high pitched, they weren’t as high as the ones from my kind. Questions were fired at me and I didn’t know how to answer them. If I took a breath I would change which I didn’t want. But if I didn’t I would most likely die or I wouldn’t answer their questions which would probably lead to them killing me. It also hit me that most of the words they used were unknown for me. It was almost like they were speaking an entirely new language. The kind of language that the men spoke too. Would that mean that they were, in fact, the same species?
Time had come that my head really started to feel heavy. If I didn’t catch a breath now I would pass out and automatically breathe in which would lead to me turning while being unconscious and that would lead to sudden death. Which I, obviously, did not want. So there I went, I opened my mouth and let the pure air fill my lungs. A burning pain emerged in my lungs and throat. I felt like I was suffocating. Tingling emerged in my tail which only made the pain from my wound worse. “I do not heal unless I am in my waters you mortal fool,” I spoke, noticeably in heavy pain. “And yes I can talk, I’m not a mute if that’s what you think,” I told the other weird looking man. I figured that they spoke the same language as I did, they just had another accent. I had once heard that some sailors had talked about our accent as neat British, not hat i knew what it meant. I just went with it. But I suppose that maybe there infact where a lot of different accents on land. That actually sounded quite exciting.
The words that left the captains mouth had me look him right in the eyes. The tingling feeling kept getting worse and worse and the pain was unbearable. A scream escaped my lips as my tail covered itself in smoke. I had never actually seen a sirene change. I wasn’t even sure if the myth was real, but now it turned out that it was, infact, very real. And happening to me.

My crewmembers did exactly as I told them. The sirene got tied up against of the masts. I walked up to her and listened to every word she said. "Well it didn't seem like your waters did you any good now, did it?" The stories my father told me, said that a sirene would heal quickly when she's in the water. She must've been in the water for quite some time before we found her. "And enough with that big mouth of yers. No need to be so rude, aye." A frown appeared on my face when the sirene screamed. Her tail... Was it on fire? What was happening? I took a step back and ordered my women to do exactly the same. Do sirens really turn into a human when they're not in the ocean anymore? This could be great! I could trade her for gold or anything else with great value. "Make sure she hasn't got any water near her! Every drop could turn the lassie back to her unhuman form!" Immediately, as a good crew does, they removed everything they could find which had water in or on them. Buckets, flasks, you name it. I looked up and could see there wasn't a single cloud in the sky, just a beautiful sun who was shining bright. "Don't try to do anything funny, aye? We are armed and aren't afraid to use our weapons." I never used a sword in a real situation yet. Ruby, the crewmember with a lot of experience, teached me everything when we were still on my father's ship. She was the first ever female pirate who was taken seriously. Ruby started out on my father's ship to cook their meals, but secretly stole a sword and trained all by herself in the kitchens when the rest was asleep. My father caught her and almost threw her of the ship, but she changed his mind once she showed him all her moves. She was better than most of his men. The moment I got my own ship and allowed only females, she was the first one who signed up. "So, tell me all about yer kind, lassie. And don't lie, unless you want this conversation to end badly."

”These are not my waters, my waters are miles away from here you seashell.” So maybe my words weren’t as nice as they would usually be. But it wasn’t like this human was being any kind either. Barely half of the words the human used sounded normal to me. So maybe they did speak a different language, but just one that looked very similar to my language which made us able to have half of a conversation in which we maybe understood some words the other said. I didn’t know exactly but I knew that the pain in my tail was stinging so much I couldn’t really focus on the differences in our languages.
The next thing the human said was so stupid even a starfish would laugh at them. My tail was already turning so the pain was lessening and I could infact speak again instead of scream. “Are you actually serious? My heavens, you couldn’t pour water out of a boot if the instructions were on the heel. We don’t change back by touching water! We have to breathe it in, uncultured uranoscopidae!” While my voice didn’t sound angry I actually was quite angry. I was just unable of sounding angry. Since we were made to have a constant beautiful voice we weren’t able to sound anything that could possibly be seen as ugly. Which actually sucked in situations like these.
“Humans can’t kill me, you have no idea who you’re dealing with,” I told the human standing infront of me. I was not afraid of humans. I was not afraid of anything. Not of a shark, not of a whale and most definitely not of some human being. I rolled my eyes at the next words the human spoke towards me. Like I would ever lie. And why was this human still calling me ‘lassie’. I had no idea what it meant. “Stop calling me lassie, I have a name. And there’s nothing to know about us.”
