Waves rolled over her tail while the top of her body was laying on the rocks, enjoying the warmth of the sun. She was the only siren around here, it was a rather secluded area and there weren't a lot of ships nearby, which made this place for most sirens very uninteresting to say the least. Sirens chose their territory based on how important it was for humans so they would always have a steady food source. It was even better if a siren had a territory with a narrow gateway, humans would have no choice but to pass through it and they would be trapped. Just a few seconds of song would make them lose control of their ship, hit the rocks and sink, so the sirens could snatch the pirates, drown them and devourer their bodies.
Not her. Not Avyanna. She wasn't particularly a nice siren and she still ate humans, but long ago a witch had cursed her and taken away her ability to lure men to their deaths. It was an horrific curse for a creature that survived that way. At first it had nearly destroyed her, she didn't even know how to hunt without her voice, but she learned. It turned out that humans aren't very bright, especially the humans that don't realize that sirens can come close to shore. Pirates were careful, but those that lived in villages near the sea? They weren't. So when somebody would see a poor, helpless girl stranded on the beach with only half her body out of the water, they would come and help. And she would grab them by their throat and quickly retreat back into the water. The fun part was that she could do this quite a lot before a village figured out that a creature was responsible for the killings, but when they did, she would move on. Plenty of villages to chose from.
Now, however, she was relaxing. Sirens didn't need to eat all the time, only yesterday she finished a rather large guy, so now she would be good for at least a couple of days, if not a week.

The treasure of captain Helmsman.
According to many, Helmsman had gathered many treasures of the years, but none was as valuable as his latest. Where he had retrieved it, or how he found it, was unknown to all. The captain had gone through all of the seven seas and had survived even the darkest of storms to bring the treasure to safety. But, the captain had made enemies along the way. Stealing, barbarous enemies that would do anything to take his beloved treasure away from him.
Garyn, captain of the Cursed Wolf, was one of the many thiefs who wanted to go after the treasure of Helmsman. He and Helmsman had been sworn enemies for many years and Garyn could simply not allow Helmsman to posses such a big treasure. Luckily for Garyn, he had already located the place where it was hidden. The treasure could be found in a narrow space, between high rocks and low waters. The place was rumored to be the living area of sirens: one of the few creatures that every sailor feared. With their beautiful looks and mesmerizing voices, sirens were able to lure a sailor into his death.
To make sure his and his crew would be safe, Garyn had come up with a plan. It was a dangerous plan, and not really one that had the most change at succeeding, but it was necessary and it would serve the greater good.
Garvyn wanted to be able to sail through the shallow, were the sirens would be, without getting caught up in their voices and their beauty. To do that, he needed someone who would be able to withstand them. Another siren. And he knew just where to find one.
At this very moment, Garyn stood on his deck. With his telescope he roamed the rocks and cliffs, looking for a siren. There was a specific one that he was looking for. There were tales of a siren who could not sing, and therefore had less power over them, humans. That was the one he wanted. Yes, he probably would still be captivated with her beauty, but without her magical voice, she would be no real threat to him.
‘Captain, captain! Someone spotted a siren!’

It was amazing weather for a siren that didn't have the intention to hunt. The sun was out, there were almost no clouds on the horizon and the water was calm. Most sirens would prefer a little storm, it made the hunt a lot easier, but for Avyanna both were good. She could hunt people during the day and night, good or bad weather. She was once the mightiest of all sirens and in her own way, she still was. No other siren would dare to go as close to humans as she did, then again, they didn't have to. They could even wait until their prey had drowned. Sometimes that was the better option, drowning could give a men back control over his actions and if they had a weapon, he could still hurt a siren. Sirens were the perfect killing machines with their voice, beauty and incredibly sharp nails and teeth made for ripping a men apart, but a sword would hurt or kill them nonetheless. They weren't invincible. Even though they liked to believe that they were.
A ripple in the water alerted her that something was coming, but she couldn't see far enough to know what was going on. The sun was high above the water and due to the reflection she could barely see more than a few meters ahead. Great. Another ripple told her that something big was coming, and though she couldn't say for sure if it was a ship or that somewhere rocks were falling from the cliffs, she decided not to wait to figure it out.
Slowly she rose, she stretched her limps and hit the water a couple times with her tail. Fish were always very attracted to a sirens tail and usually they cleaned it, so sirens let them, but she didn't need her head around those same fish when she was going back in the water. She turned around and lazily pushed her body off the rocks. If she went into the water with her back on the rocks, her hair would get stuck in every little crack. She learned that the hard way. She entered the water and submerged into the depth, it was time to figure out what had made those ripples so she could either get rid of it and go back to sunbathing, or decide to find another spot somewhere nobody would bother her.

With his young age, Garyn had already accomplished a lot. When he had been the age of eight, his father had taken him on most of his journeys. To learn, to see and to work. Even though he had been the sun of the captain, he had to work like every other boy or men on the ship. That had made him realize that being a captain was much more than figuring out the route and sitting back in his cabin. A captain was the most important man of the ship. He was the one who held everything together. He had to be greater then the crew, being the more important one. But at the same time, he would need to be
someone who would earn their respect.
Years had passed by and Garyn had sadly lost his father in a storm, which had resulted in him being the captain of The Cursed Wolf. At first, Garyn had doubted in the men would have trusted him, since some of them had been older and had much more experience at sea that he’d had a the time. But somehow, they had grown to love and respect him and now they were his to protect, for as long as he would live.
Garyn made his way to port, where one of the crewmembers had called him from. If they really had spotted a siren, Garyn would almost call himself lucky. It was the perfect day to hunt for them, since the sky was clear and so were the waters.
‘Where?’ he asked one of his men. A younger man, one who had only been with the crew for only about two years now, pointed in the direction. He grasped his telescope again and focused it towards the direction his sailor had pointed in. Nothing.
‘Are you sure?’
‘I am, sir. We saw her sitting peacefully, enjoying the sunlight.’
‘Did she see us?’ If that would be the case, they would have to brace themselves for what was to come. The chance of them running into a siren that could poison their minds with her song, was much bigger then the odds of running into the siren who could not use her voice to hunt. The problem was: nobody knew what the magical creature looked like.
‘Stay put, be aware. If you see a shadow in the waters, alert me immediately.’

Right after entering the water she could sense that it was a ship out there, even without looking at the vessel of the ship. Everything in water made a different kind of wave or sound, sirens were tuned in to that sound and used it to navigate their way through rough water during a storm. That was why they would be able to swim and hunt during a storm and a human was a sitting duck waiting to get killed. Storms also reflected in the water and made the waves bigger, so that whatever was swimming in a storm, would be invisible to the human eye. Unfortunately today that wasn't going to happen. Avyanna could clearly see the vessel of the ship and she knew that they would be able to spot her too in this water, it was too clear and the sun too bright to be able to hide in it. If the water was just a bit more troubled she could hide under her hair, the dark green would make it look like seaweed floating by, but even that wasn't an option. If she would circle that ship now, they would see her clear as day and they would probably attack.
Humans usually wouldn't attack a siren, at least it was very uncommon, but she too had heard the tales of the songless siren and if they figured out it was her, they would probably try to kill her. At least those that knew about sirens would, she couldn't see what kind of ship it was while she was under water. Pirates would probably send a harpoon her way, merchants would just make sure to get the hell out of this place. She had never seen pirates here, but merchants did occasionally pass  by, so she guessed it was the latter.
Whoever it was, she stayed in the shallow waters, waiting for them to leave. She wasn't even sure if anybody had spotter her, so waiting was the best course of action. For now. If it would take too long or if they attacked, she would swim as deep as she could to avoid any weapons and then make sure to leave. Without singing no siren was a match for a fully equipped ship. Unless one of them fell into the water of course, then she could kill them. Even when she wasn't hungry, Avyanna would not let a men live when they entered her waters or decided to attack her. Song or no, she was dangerous.

How to catch a siren?
It was a question that many sailors had asked themselves and even more had tried to, but they had always failed. No sailor was a match for the beautifully sung melodies and when a siren showed herself, no man could deny her beauty. Even when one would be able to capture the creature, the siren would still be able to persuade them into setting her free. And if that would happen, it was safe to say that not even one men could tell the tale.
‘Get the nets ready!’ yelled Garyn. He wasn’t sure if the siren would come close to his ship. If she was smart, she would keep her distance. But then again, a smart creature wouldn’t swim into nets. Fish, maybe, but not someone who had a functioning brain, almost human like. But they needed something to captivate the siren. ‘And get the weapons, spears and harpoons preferably! We don’t want to kill her, just wound her so she’ll be weakened.’ If they could wound her, it would be harder for her to swim and move forward, making it easier for his men to track her. And eventually: capture her.
All of his men were gathered at the deck, looking over the railing as hard as they could. Most of them had spears in their hand, ready to be fired. Most of the spears were tied to ropes, making sure they wouldn’t lose them in the sea and her vicious waves. Thankfully, the sea had given them a peaceful day, with almost no waves and clear waters.
Garyn kept looking through his telescope. He stared into the waters, trying to see more than just the fish and the ripples in the waters. The green color of the seaweed greeted his eyes. He ignored it, knowing that it was nothing more than food for fish.
‘Captain! Siren at starboard! Siren at starboard!’ Garyn hurried towards the other side of his ship to see if his men were correct.
‘Fire the harpoon!’ Immediately, one was fired into the water. Garyn held his hand up, signaling that they had to wait. He bent over the ledge, trying to see if they had hit the siren.

The people on that ship were making a lot of noise, yelling at each other and running over the deck, sending vibrations through their ship into the water. It took Avyanna a while to figure out what exactly was going on, but then she could make out a figure in the water from the other side of the ship. Did one of those idiots just fall in?
Slowly she swam towards the ship, her curiosity winning it from being sensible and staying put. She did stay near the seabed, hopefully her hair and the depth she was at would be enough to keep her shielded from the human eye. And that was when she noticed the other siren. It was obviously a young siren out there -and probably one of the stupidest for getting caught- because her first instinct was to fight the harpoon that was stuck in her tail, instead of just ripping it out or starting to sing so the people that fired it were distracted. Those people were definitely pirates, she had never seen merchants with harpoons like that. Avyanna was directly under the ship now, so the pirates couldn't see her and she noticed that it was indeed a very young siren, maybe even younger than she initially thought. That explained why she retorted to fighting instead of singing. It was a big ship above them and her song wouldn't be strong enough to keep an entire ship busy. The older the siren, the more range and volume the song had and so more people would be affected, but a siren had to be above water to sing or nobody would hear it. If this particular siren went above the waves, she was done for.
It bugged Avyanna that she had to do something. Sirens weren't usually very sociable creatures, but they did protect their younglings. It was an unwritten rule, because it was a very difficult proces to create more sirens, so when they managed it, that siren would be protected. It meant that Avyanna wasn't going to leave without helping this little idiot. If she did and another siren would hear about it, she would be in big trouble.
She slowly swam back and then around the ship, so she had a good view of what was going on up there. There were a lot of pirates on the ship, but only one of them was holding the harpoon that had settled itself in the tail of that siren. He was leaning over the edge of the ship, perhaps to get a good look at her, but probably because he needed the rails to hold him from falling over. Perhaps it did help him, but even that rails wouldn't be able to save him from a fully grown, very old and skilled siren. Her.
Her body only needed a few meters to get up to full speed and when she was, she gracefully jumped out of the water, right near in front of the pirates. She could hear them scream and yell, they had been so busy focusing on the other siren, they didn't know there was a second one. A much bigger one. She had a normal human body, but during a sirens life their tail never stopped growing. Her tail was at least as big as an average men, if not more. Without hesitation she grabbed the guy holding the harpoon in the neck, buried her nails in him and pulled him overboard. When both of them entered the water, she ripped open all of his arteries and the water immediately turned red from his blood. She needed to be a bit more invisible to save that siren and his blood gave her the slight advantage that she needed.

The harpoon had hit its target, which had caused joy among his crew. Garyn however, knew that they should not celebrate too soon. Sirens were strong, their tails had an immense strength and if the siren would be able to separate herself from the harpoon, they could be in big trouble.
‘Well, what are you fools waiting for? Pull her up!’ He yelled, summoning his men to gather around the one who was holding the harpoon. He obviously had some trouble with the strength of the siren, since he seemed unable to lift her out of the water and onto the ship.
Before his men could come to action, something big had emerged from the waters. Garyn was close enough to see what was happening. Another siren had jumped out of the water and she was flying through the sky as if she could fly. With an immense spend she was coming towards them. Her tail was almost as long as himself and her green hair remembered him of the seaweed that he had previously seen. Which may or may have not been seaweed after all.
The siren attacked on of his sailors, he could see her long nails digging into his skin. She pulled him with her so easily that it almost seemed like he weighed nothing at all. ‘Sink me,’ he murmered under his breath, realizing that he and his men were under the attack of not one, but two sirens. One was probably aiding the other and she seemed to be succeeding. Not only did she pull one of his men down with her, they had also lost the harpoon and with that: the other siren.
‘Alls hands on deck!’ He ordered, meaning that every single on of his crewmembers should be present to help defend the ship. But at the same time. Garyn wanted on of the sirens. It was the only way he would be able to find the treasure of Helmsman, and boy did he want that booty.
‘Get the next harpoon ready and make sure to hit them where it hurts!’ Their tail was probably their strongest point, which would mean that would be the place where they should hurt them, to weaken them. ‘And see if we can lure them out of the water! When they are in the air, it’s easier to spot them and to hit them with our weapons!’ When they were in the water, they would have the advantage.
Garyn himself took out his pistol and loaded it. This was one of the few ways he could think of to lure the sirens out of the water. The first shot was fired, but he was not sure if he had hit anything at all. But maybe it would be enough to provoke one of them.
‘Follow my lead!’ If the others would do it as well, it would make it easier to capture on of them. ‘Hold the harpoon steady, don’t fire it until I say so,’ he said to the few men that had prepared the next harpoon. After that, he fired the next shot into the water.
‘Come at me, ye wenches.’

Her action had a lot of effect on the situation they were in, not in the least that the pirates were shouting and running on that damned ship, before they started to shoot at the water. Avyanna pushed the younger siren down on the seabed so they were as deep in the water as possible, this way the water would stop most of the bullets speed so they wouldn't be able to hurt them. She grabbed the harpoon that was in the younger sirens tail and pulled at it, but nothing happened. The harpoon was stuck in her tail and Avyanna would need to rip open the tail in order to get it out. That tail would heal, so it wasn't such a big deal, but it would hurt nonetheless.
She looked right in the eyes of the other siren, the little one nodded. She knew what needed to be done and braced herself for the pain, so Avyanna could get the harpoon out. With one hand she grabbed the harpoon and the other hand she forced right into the tail, ripping it open far enough for the harpoon to come out. The red color of the water was fading, but it quickly got replaced by the purple color of sirens blood. However much it hurt, the youngling only looked like she was in pain, she did nothing to stop Avyanna or work against her. Good girl.
The next problem was to get out of there. From the seabed the bullets wouldn't be able to hurt them, but they couldn't stay there. Eventually those pirates would see them again and the sky was too clear, no storm was coming to save them. When you really needed something, it always turned out that it was better to be prepared to do it yourself, because nobody would be there to help. Avyanna went up and the first thing she felt was a bullet entering her tail, she would scream out of anger, but there was no time to lose. She pushed the youngling under the ship, to escape from a different side, but when she tried to follow something was wrong. She couldn't swim further than under the vessel and when she turned, she saw that part of her tail was caught in the nets these filthy pirates had thrown into the ocean. Pissed off she trashed and tried to get her tail free, but none of it worked. She had to leave the safety of the vessel of the ship to use her nails or teeth to rip herself free from the nets. So she did, but the second she did, another bullet found it's way to her shoulder. She trashed again, part of tail was above water for maybe half a second, but she knew that gave away her location. Not good. She needed to get out of there right now.

There would be so much more glory to his name if he would find the treasure. Not only because he would have navigated his ship through an area filled with sirens, but mainly because he would have captured one and he would have made her his. No one had done that before. If he could achieve that, he would be one of the most famous captains of… Well, of all time.
‘We caught one, we caught one!’ Garyn glanced over the ledge. He could see the tail for a second. It was the green one, which shifted to tones of brown and red when it was under the sun. That tail belonged to the siren that had attacked them. Garyn had already concluded that she was the stronger one. The way she had attacked them and just how much strength she seemed to have, indicated that she was much older than the siren they had spotted first. Frankly, he would have gone for the younger one, which would have probably been easier to capture in the first place.
‘We need to pull her up! Whatever you do, don’t let go of the nets! And try to weaken her as much as you can!’ She could swim down, making it harder for them to lift her out of the water and onto the boat. They needed all of their strength combined to make sure they would get her out of the water. One of his men started to get another harpoon ready.
‘No, are you an idiot?!’ Garyn walked over to him and pushed him away from the weapon. ‘The harpoon could cut into the nets, actually setting her free. Do you want to set her free?’
The sailor look at him, with fear in his eyes. He was visibly shaking. ‘N-no, captain. Of-ofcourse not.’
‘Then get your pistol and try to shoot her, you idiot.’ He would not have it that they were finally this close to catching a siren; something no pirate had ever done before, and that one of his men would be such a fool and would actually aid her in her escape.
All of his men tried to lift the siren out of the sea. Garyn watched. He could see that the siren was still struggling, but a part of the net was already out of the water. The scales of her tail gleamed in the sun and parts of her green hair seemed to be stuck in the ropes of the net.

The problem with her current situation was where she got caught in the net, it was the end of her tail that was stuck and that was exactly the part of her body with the most strength. She needed her tail to push herself forward, but she couldn't use her tail to do just that and the rest of her body wasn't as strong. If it was her arm stuck in the net, she would just drag the net and perhaps some of the pirates holding it under water, but now they had the advantage. No matter how hard she trashed against the net, it didn't work. Even worse, she got more stuck with every movement she made.
And then another bullet went straight through her tail. She couldn't scream underwater, but fuck that hurt. Until now she hadn't realized how much the water stopped the speed of those filthy weapons. Now every time she tried to work against the net and the pirates that were dragging her out of the water, she felt the bullet shifting in her tail. It hurt like hell. She was going to make these assheads pay for that.
Avyanna just wasn't sure how, because they managed to get most of her tail out of the water already while she was still stuck in that net and then they even lifted her body out of the water. She was still struggling and one of the pirates got hit right on his head with her tail, which caused him to lose balance and fall right into the water. Now it truly became a matter of life and death for that pirate and the others probably knew that. She had already killed one of them within seconds after she took him down with her, she would kill the other guy too if she managed to get back into the water. So if they dropped her, they lost another member of their crew. Fortunately for them, they didn't let go and the net didn't tear.
She had no idea how long it took them to hoist her on board the ship, but eventually they managed. Avyanna was completely stuck in the nets and multiple guns and other weapons were aimed at her, so she stilled. She stopped working against them and just bared her teeth, waiting to see what would happen now that they got her on the ship. If they wanted her death, they would probably have done so already, so she was kind of curious to see what it was they wanted with her.

They got her. They actually got her.
Her body ad tail were al twisted up in the net as she lied on his deck. She didn’t startle, she didn’t try to escape. Not anymore. She had noticed the weapons aimed at her, which had caused her to stop moving. However, she was showing her teeth. Sharp like knives, Garyn bet.  They shouldn’t come to close to those things, but since she was stuck and could not move her tail like she intended, he figure they were safe.
Garyn stepped forward, slowly analyzing her. He started to walk around the siren. He could see purple blood oozing out of not only her tail, but also out of her shoulder. At least they had hit her a few times, which was their benefit and her loss. With every step he took, her eyes were on him. Even though she didn’t say anything, he could see in her facial expression that she was pissed as hell. However, he had won. She was his to keep.
‘You fought bravely, lass,’ he complimented her. She had not only aided one of her own,  but she also killed on of his crewmembers. One that would be remembered later that day, Caryn would make sure that would happen later. Then, there was his second sailor, who had fallown down in the water because of the strength the siren possessed. However, he could swim himself to safety. And if not, a few others from the crew could help him.
Garyn stopped his triumph-walk right in front of her face, so she could look at him while he spoke. He kneeled down, still in a safe distance so she wasn’t able to get to him with her nails or tail, but close enough for her to see him fully.
‘What’s wrong? Don’t you have a song for us to sing?’ He asked her. She had not once opened hear mouth to enchant them with her voice. Why? Even on deck, out of the water, she would have the power if she just started singing. Garyn suspected that she simply couldn’t. That would mean that they had caught the one siren in the entire world that was not able to use her voice to lure sailors.
Joy, triumph and a feeling of excitement washed over his body, realizing he had already won the prize. The siren who couldn’t enchant him. She would have absolutely no control over him nor his crew. ‘What’s your name, dear? People should know what the name of the siren is that Captain Garyn and the crew of The Cursed Wolf have conquered!’

Her eyes followed him everywhere he went. She was not about to let him get close without at least biting that smug look of his face. It was quite obvious who the captain was of this miserable band of rugrats. She knew he thought that he had her, especially since she didn't open her mouth to sing. There were rumours of the songless siren and she just knew he had heard of them, otherwise he would have a lot more fear in his facial features. His taunting question only made that even more clear.
He wanted to know her name. At least, that was what he asked, after that he was just bragging about who he was. Was that supposed to intimidate her? She used to be known as the scourge of the sea before that bloody witch took all magic from her voice. No name would intimidate her, not even the name of the guy that might kill her. He just couldn't be sure that she actually understood what he was saying, so she raised her eyebrows to him, but remained quiet. Supposedly not knowing what it was he wanted from her. She didn't. Avyanna knew he wanted her name, but everything else remained a mystery for her.
The thing was, she didn't really like mysteries that involved her and she certainly didn't like the guy in front of her. There was one thing she could do, something all sirens could when their voice was not enough. Her beauty was still unparalleled in the human world, she just needed to find the weakest of the pirates to use it on. The captain would never go for it, the stronger a human was and the more willpower he had, less likely it was that he would be affected by just her beauty without her song, but that young boy over there looked more affected by her presence. He was young, although all humans were for her, and he kept on staring at her, his mouth formed a surprised O. It was almost cute.
Avyanna made eye-contact with him and smiled, it was almost too easy the way he was looking at her. His hands were slightly shaking, as if he didn't know what to do with them. She did. She knew exactly what she wanted him to do. She wanted him to grab that gun strapped to his waist, aim it at the captain and pull the trigger. It really wasn't much that she asked from him. He just wasn't quite there. Yet. She made a small noise, as if she was in pain -not even as if, these bullets were really hurting her- and she knew he was done for. This time she smiled brightly at him, while he raised his gun and aimed it at the captain. Good boy.

Garyn wondered if she could understand him. He thought she would. Although sirens seemed to sing in theor own language, Garyn had never heard if they had a different language then theirs. The siren hadn’t answered his question, but that didn’t mean she was unable to understand his words. It simply meant that she had chosen not to give hem the satisfaction just yet, which warned him that he fight wasn’t over. They might have captured her and she was on his deck, but she was not ready to give up and she would do anything in her power to set herself free.
He followed her eyes, seeing how they met with the eyes of one of his younger sailors. The lad, Thomas, was only fiteen, maybe close to sixteen. He had been on this ship for most of his pubescent life, meaning that he had not been in touch with many women, other then the few they had met during their travels. Garyn could see the look of wonder in his eyes and he knew that the siren had control over him, even with just looking at him.
‘Thomas.’ Garyn spoke softly, trying to get through the lad, but it was already clear that simply talking with him wasn’t enough to break the spell. Thomas had lifted his pistol and was now aiming at the captain himself. Garyn was just seconds away from the order the siren was about to give, giving him not much time to think.
‘Take his pistol! All of his weapons!’ Garyn had just finished speaking in time. The shot was fired, but luckily one of his men had hasted towards the young one, grabbing his arm and pointing the pistol into the air. For a moment, the spell seemed broken and Thomas had a horrified look on his face.
‘Captain, sir! I am so sorry! She-‘
‘Take him away, make sure she’s unable to reach out to him. To any of the younger and weaker ones.’ Thomas would not be the only man that would have trouble resisting the siren. Even Garyn himself would have to fight hard to find the strength in himself to stay away from her and not fall into her traps. The siren he had captured, though les dangerous with her voice, still seemed to be very powerful.
‘We need to cover her eyes and mouth as fast as we can.’ If he didn’t need her to guide him through the waters, he would have simply stabbed her eyes out. ‘And make sure her hands are tied as well. We don’t need those filthy claws in us.’
